Cambridgshire Cats Youth 14 - Peterborough Saxons Youth 0

The Cats Youth travelled to Peterborough to take on the Saxons on their own turf in what promised to be a hard battle for bragging rights in this local derby.

Following the previous week’s game the Cats entered the game in an upbeat mood, eager to get their first win.

The Cats received the ball and the offense wasted no time in signaling its intentions. George Gabriel ran through a massive hole and left 3 Saxon tackles on the ground as he sped 57 yards for the opening Touch Down giving the Cats a 6-0 lead.

The Saxon’s quickly tried to level the score, initial good running plays followed with what looked like a certain 6 points when a Saxons receiver found himself wide open but failed to hold on to the catch. The Saxons had to punt.

Once again the Cats offensive dug in its claws and marched down the field. After some strong running from Josh Aylett & Ryan Moulsher, the Cats went to the air when Quarterback Chris Aldred launched a pin point scoring pass to Adam Liard for an 48 Yard TD. The resulting PAT went wide of the post to give the Cats a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cats thought they had taken an 18-0 lead when Josh Aylett sprung over the goal line only for it to be called back for a holding penalty.

This score remained 12-0 well into the 2nd quarter, with the Saxons having little success moving the ball against a tough Cats defense, Relentless pressure pushed the Saxons deep into their own territory when the defense forced the Saxon’s punter to run back into the end zone where he was swiftly tackled by Ben May & Daniel Pasquier for a safety giving the Cats a 14-0 lead at the end of the half.

The Second half saw the Saxons make adjustments to get back into the game and they started to test the Cats Defense, good running was proving hard to stop but the Cats defense found the big plays when needed, causing a fumble to hand the ball back to the offense.

The second half continued with tough defense from both sides. The Cats offense proved to have the edge driving the ball deep into Saxon’s territory and running down the game clock to limit offensive time for the Saxons.

The Cats ran out 14-0 winners on this occasion.

Head Coach Jonathan Smith said “It was a great win for us in only our second game; a win over local rivals is always sweet but the Saxon’s will be tough to beat in our next encounter. That being said all the players should be extremely proud of what they have achieved so quickly.”

The Cambridgeshire Cats youth travel to play the Norwich Devils on May 17th.
