Cats Face Up To Toughest Test Yet
Cambridgeshire Cats 26 – Hampshire Thrashers 12
The first of the Cats Inter-conference games saw the Thrashers make the trip up from the South Coast to Coldhams Common. Hampshire boasted a formidable squad including one of the most feared running backs in the league in Nick Fray.
Head Coach Rick Bices’ decision to give Tommy ‘TD’ Durkin his first start at QB paid off immediately when he ran in from 7 yards out to open the days scoring.
The Thrashers responded with Fray going almost half the length of the pitch to score. A failed extra point attempt left the score 7-6 to the Cats.
Having identified the Thrashers threat was their running game the Cats Defence made the necessary adjustments to allow their Offence to put 20 unanswered points on the board. With the score 26-7 Hampshire’s Fray was able to score a consolation touchdown before time ran out.
Milton Keynes City Pathfinders 0 - Cambridgeshire Cats 76
The inaugural road game against the first year Pathfinders team was an opportunity for the Cats own rookies to shine.
A total of 4 Cambridgeshire based rookies found their way onto the score sheet, with WR Sam Carter opening the days account with a 5 yard TD reception. Dougie Andrews stepped to take on the kicking duties, from injured regular Matt Casey, firing home 10 of the 11 extra points.
TE Neill Prothero used his height to great advantage to make his TD reception and WR John-William 'Jiggy' Scott completed the scoring for the day with his impressive 45 yard TD catch.
Cambridgeshire Cats 35 - Bedfordshire Blue Raiders 0
The Cambridgeshire defence weathered the storm of the Raiders power running game with James 'Coco' Kocherhans leading the team to its first shut out of the 2008 campaign, making an impressive 22 tackles.
The Cats ground game responded in kind amassing 239 yards of its own, with an incredible average of 7 yards per carry. Rookie FB Ali Minto led the way for RB Dom Fox to get his first 100 yard game of the year, with both backs finding their way into the Raiders end zone.
WR's Tony Reveglia and Jonathan Smith caught touchdown passes to complete the Cats comprehensive victory.
Cambridgeshire Cats 7 - Peterborough Saxons 6
After a comedy of errors the Cats have the last laugh in the fiercely contested local derby.
Cambridgeshire QB Martin Brown redeemed himself after turning the ball over 6 of the total 10 turnovers by the Cats on the day, including the fumble returned by the Saxons for their only score of the game; by finding WR Jonathan Smith in the corner of the end zone for a 15yrd Touchdown pass.
Matt Casey held his nerve and slotted home the vital extra point to give the home side the advantage. This single point was the difference between the two teams as poor weather limited both sides to under 200 total yards of total offence.
